2 dislikes are from people who catapulted due to choppy conditions. Just wanted to come on here and say there is SO MUCH work that goes into creating these tutorials. Having to come up with new ideas constantly, waking up early to finish editing videos in time, arranging a boat to get good footage, hours of editing, having to film all over again due to technical issues etc. if that doesn't deserve a like and a sub, I don't know what does! You sharing your know-how per se is already worth SO MUCH. That one 7-minute tutorial video has hours of work behind it! Keep that in mind next time you hover over the dislike button.

Hi Alara! I can't speak for anyone else but I feel that I have to explain myself after your comment. I do appreciate how much work there is in editing video having done some myself and how much work it is to just share what you know, also being a coach myself. I never implied that there is no work or that it's crap. I actually think the videos are of excellent quality, the shots are amazing and you guys are doing excellent work. BUT, in this particular occasion, as I said in my comment, I felt compelled to gently prick you so that, if my opinion is worth anything, subsequent videos may have a higher windsurfing to canvassing ratio. I'm sorry if I upset you, it wasn't my intention, but this is the nature of youtube. I'll see you guys in the water!

  • @dairyairman

That's really good advice! I never thought about closing the gap and lifting the windward rail to deal with chop. I'm gonna try that! What I usually do when it gets super rough is point the board slightly off the wind so I'm sliding between the waves instead of bashing into the wave faces. When it's real windy, the board wants to climb into the wind, which makes it bash into waves. When it's like that you can point slightly downwind and not worry too much about getting back upwind because it's so easy to do in those conditions.

I kindly offer my own experiences in this particular department:
First, to all those beginning to acquire this skill, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of working out the legs, either in the gym or the convenience of your own home. I especially felt this as I started to curl the toes of my front foot up (and drive down with the heel in order to "fly" the board) my quadriceps would begin to burn after a while.
Secondly, it is important to regulate fin pressure through your rear leg because driving the fin too hard through the chops may induce spinouts. At least this is what happened to me. Why? Possibly because, through chops the fin can get air and lose grip.
Nico, a question: If I am not mistaken, the issue of sailing over chop becomes especially challenging during gybes. Do you also somehow try to fly the board when carving? Or is withstanding chops merely an issue of keeping knees bent enough to be able to absorb chops?
Good presentation. Very clear, and very concise. Looking forward to the next one.

Could you make one about harness?? I'm often finding myself with pain or sore muscles in my lower back and obliques specially if I use a bigger sail. I know that it could be my stand but I think my stand is good.

Hi, It’s a fin question. My Magic ride 118 came with a 40cm fin. The board scuttled / flew over chop. Brilliant. Then I was told that was far too much fin and I risked serious injury so tried two smaller fins (30cm, 36cm G10 freerides) which didn’t cut it at all. (90kg, 5.5/6.4m sail, 25 knots, 75cm wide 118 MR board).
1- am I overfinned if it works? (Despite what the charts say)
2- is there a serious risk to life and limb as told?
3- what is the solution to happy safe blasting in heavy chop?
    - should I just carry on or do I need a narrower board for 25 knots?
    Question 2 - stance
I like to use a 3 strap set up which is meant to favour an upright stance, but is scary in big chop as I fear that I will be catapulted. So I lean out as far as I can and it seems more secure.
I find it easier to keep the board flat with 3 straps so I’m fast, don’t head upwind etc.
Should I ditch the 3 straps or can you tweak what I’m doing please?
    Question 3
Is there a one board solution for over 18-30+ knots, sail range 3.3-7.5m? MR 118 reluctant to plane with 7.5 at 18 knots.
I want to start foiling for low winds and do everything else on one board.
Thanks and loving your channel, Elliot

@@Nico_GER7 I think that on my level it is more about sailing and getting expirience on the water, than watching tutorials and analizing them, but if I must say it can be something about How to get in to power sailing (or how to easier do that) and then how to get into straps. If I messed up something and You do that and I miss that tutorials, I am really sorry.
If it's 4Bft, I have 6,5m2 (my biggest sail, but still very old one) and my body weight is about 65kg, is it enought to get planing (power sailing)?

Thanks a lot. What works for me is to relax as much as possible in my whole body the worse it gets. Tensioning up all your muscles in self defense against chop makes you stiff and you'll get thrown around. But it takes some practice to learn.
I would really appreciate a video about surviving a planing jibe in harsh chop - this is a very big challenge for many real world windsurfers :-)

    Hi Nico,
Thanks for this great tutorial! I really appreciate the effort all of you put into this!
I tried it myself yesterday with succes.
But there are 2 issues which I am struggling with.
Yesterday I was windsurfing on a lake on a gusty day with my biggest gear. 120L freerace board and 7,2 2-camber freeride sail.
As soon as the gust hits me I get planning in a broad reach to pick up speed. But then I need to get upwind as much as possible trough the chop to compensate for coming lulls.
Lifting the windward rail and closing the gap works, but it seems I can only do this by pressing down the toes on my back foot as almost all pressure is on my back foot and this puts me into spinout when I want to get maximum upwind on the leeward rail. My trim felt ok, the board was flying on the fin when the sail was well powered.
    So, 2 questions:
    1. How do I get more pressure on the front foot to avoid spinout?
    2. What is the best way to safely recover from spinout?
    Looking forward to your comments.

  • @windsurfer3329
    @windsurfer3329 2 года назад

Well, you asked for it; so I am gonna reply :-)) I wish you had a chance to sail in our world famous SF bay. In gusty westerlies, waist high chop comes right towards you when you are going out, almost 90 degrees to the direction you are supposed to be traveling. You can perhaps avoid one or two, but the third one almost always gets you. I found out going a little off-wind and taking the chop sideways mitigate the consequences of head-on impact and unintentional airs. When it gets really choppy and unmanageable, I also unhook from my harness because sailing becomes mogul skiing. I really cannot manage to lift the windward rail as you are showing in the video because there are so many more crucial things I have to deal with, regarding the board control. What do you really do when you have to embrace the chop right on, and it is waist high? I love your commitment in producing these kinds of videos because so many people do not know what to do, and leave windsurfing because of frustration.

Nice, I have a question for you, I am a young surfer and I am having a lot of struggles with espicially this, when I lose control Im not sure what to do. What do I do when I lose control? My problem is that my front foot always wants to bounce out of the strap when I’m going at high-speed, particularly in chop. That means I have to run my boom at the bottom of my Neil Pryde Evo sails cut out, which reduces how much the board will fly and makes me slow. I’ve spoken to so many different people about how to fix the problem and no-one has been able to help me. I’ve tried downhaul, outhaul, boom height, footstrap position, footstrap width, different boards, fins and everything else in between and nothing works. It’s gotten to the point where I hate using my slalom gear because it’s just frustrating. Can anyone help me sort this issue so I can get back to enjoying my slalom gear again?

Thank you for making this video. Let's hear your comment on mast position. In choppy conditions I've always been concerned with the waterline of the board. That said, during choppy conditions, I move my mast base slight behind the ”normal position” for the sail size I deem best. This gives me less board in the water which helps me control the chop and keeps my speed up. I like to rig powered but I do find that spin out can also occur if my sail and position are not perfect for the conditions.

I go diving with the nose all the time

So an overview if i understood it well..when it's choppy(always haha) we dont dig the windward rail..we lift it and we counterbalance it by closing the gap between the sail. Also we put mast foot pressure through our front hand(if the nose lifts). Wow really interesting. i was always thinking that in choppy waters we must always dig the windward rail so the board slices through chop instead of bouncing. Thanks man!

Bingo. Digging the rail is something for wave/freemove boards. You want the chop to pass through from underneath. Actually, the counter movement is a series of things, but if you close the gap the rest should happen naturally and I try to not overcomplicate it for the viewers. When you close the gap you will have more pressure on the backfoot and the fin, which allows you to keep your course and lift the nose and windward rail at the same time. Let me know how it goes!

@@Nico_GER7 ok.i got.it..one more question. Aren't you more prone to spin outs when the back foot pressure is increased? Also you lift the windward rail by lifting your heels..right? Also you are a f***ing beast man..never seen anyone goes so fast in chop. Thanks again for your amazing content and keep it up!🤝

Are you perhaps bending your arms or protruding at the waist. Try sailing with an extended front arm and "sit down on the barstool" whilst keeping a straight back. Let us know if it helps :-)
